PLATE 103

In early 1867 the Board of Inland Revenue agreed to supply the General Post Office, (GPO), with a single proof sheet from each denomination of postage stamp for display at the international exhibition which was being held in Paris.

For the production of the penny stamps plate 103 was used. This plate had the revised, (Die 2), head and the check letters in all four corners. (All issued Penny Blacks had stars in the top corners). The printings were all made on soft white card and all were imperforate.

The printings produced for this exhibition were as follows :-

  1. One penny in black (Plate 103)
  2. One penny in rose (Plate 103)
  3. Two pence in blue (Plate 9)
  4. Two pence in black (Plate 9)

All the items shown at the exhibition were in blocks of 20 (as illustrated below). Although produced for the exhibition, the two pence in black was never shown. Also on display was a block of 20 taken from the supply of the 1½d value which had been printed between March and April 1860. This stamp was perforated and in the unissued rosy-mauve shade.
